Interesting article in the NY Times Style section about cutting back on the splurges we normally take for granted and taking a closer look at what and how much we are spending. Let's face it most of us don't have a million dollars in the bank to fall back on should we lose our jobs, etc. I know I have become much more conscious of what I spend my money on. I have not been buying stationery I don't need (I have a desk full of it) or little junk that's $10 here and $10 there. It all adds up and when it does all you've got is more junk, no where to put it and nothing to show for it. I was never a "saver" but I am becoming one! It's a good article aside from the featured spender who spends $2,000.00 a month on grooming herself and her teacup dog plus actually eating expenses. I don't spend that much on my hair or my dog but I am not resorting to at home coloring EVER!

I can see it now... Thrift is totally going to be the new overspending!
Jewelry and art are my week spots, and that adds up fast. I'm trying to be good now because I'm saving for a fab vacation in Europe in a few years!
I love the new look of your banner- and your blog as always-
This is a very good point- I was thinking about hom much I truly need to live vs/ what I spend the other day- and it was a bit upsetting to see the waste.
I also get very ovewhelemed by the clutter I have in my home- of all the things I have bought and dont need.
I am reading Susie Ormond Women and Money right now and really like it- I think I am going to post about the book and my new money resoutions soon- will stop by on the day i do so you can check it out if you are interested.
I will definitely have to read this article later. I'm the same as you. I've become very aware of what I spend and evaluating it all. After I saw the debit diet on Oprah and what percent of our income we should save, spend on mortgage, entertainment, etc. I really started to look at things different. Some people just abuse money and I don't care how much you have, it's SO not cool to not value the dollar. Hey, we are all guilty in some form or another...
