While Kate Spade's showroom may be located in Chelsea, the scene Tuesday morning at the Fall 2010 preview was far more befitting of the Upper East Side. Guests browsed the beautiful baubles, feminine frocks, and pretty purses while nibbling mini-French toast and sipping mimosas. Among the brunch set, so many lovely accessories and garments were on display that it was hard to take it all in. There was, however, a group of inventive accessories that particularly stood out: clutches that resemble classic books.
"We wanted to pretend we had our own publishing house," said creative director Deborah Lloyd of her inspiration for the bags. They designed all the clutch "cover" art in-house and were able to get permission to use The Great Gatsby, Emma, The Importance of Being Earnest, Great Expectations, and A Tale of Two Cities because they were written before lawyers thought about licensing potential. (How quaint.) Fitting the brand to a "T", the fiction refashioned into a carryall is certainly an excellent conversation starter.
"The Kate Spade girl likes to be the center of attention," said Lloyd of what she hopes will become collectibles that girls not only wear, but display and stack around their home as they would actual reading materials. On sale beginning in August, the brand will release the volumes one at a time as a sort of Book-of-the-Month Club. While prices are not yet available, they're sure to be more expensive than your average paperback.
