Brigid Berlin: A Retrospective

Date: Feb 7, 2009 daily until May 3, 2009

Where: The Warhol Museum - Pittsburgh, PA

This small retrospective of Warhol’s closest friend and confidant Brigid Berlin and the work she created from the 1960s to the present includes Berlin’s early Polaroids, tit paintings, trip books, black books, tape recordings, audio recordings and recent needlepoints that depict sensationalist covers of the New York Post. Berlin, the daughter of Richard Berlin, who was the director of the Hearst empire for 52 years, was raised in New York’s elite social circles. Berlin and Warhol met in 1964 and she quickly became a Factory regular and part of Warhol’s inner circle as well as a close personal friend. Berlin appeared in many Warhol films, including Chelsea Girls (1966), Imitation of Christ (1967), and The Nude Restaurant (1967), as well as numerous Factory Diaries episodes.

Also included in the exhibition are various Warhol photographs and ephemera from the Museum’s collection and archives relating to this rebellious New York heiress.

At Home with Brigid Berlin

I mentioned before my love of Brigid Berlin and Warhol. NYSD has a great feature on her home which I have seen before in the documentary "Pie in the Sky" but not as in depth as this - she's a crazy collector and as you will see, a lover of chintz and pugs. Make sure to check out the article for lots more fun photos - Enjoy!

“I don’t like gambling or anything like that – I like transacting and spending money.” – Brigid Berlin

P.S. I am still annoyed that I was invited to this party and couldn't go!

Nobody loves the New York Post more than Brigid Berlin, the privileged socialite who became an Andy Warhol "superstar." Berlin, whose father, Richard Berlin, was chairman of the Hearst media empire for 52 years, is an artist, and what she's been making lately are needlepoint pillows of Post front pages. For instance: "Bad Heir Day" showing Phillip Marshall, the disgraced son of Brooke Astor; "I Snorted My Dad" with Keith Richards; and "Good Knot," the hanging of Saddam Hussein. Berlin - who confessed, "I'm addicted to The Post" - will have 11 front pages on display at her show at John McWhinnie at Glenn Horowitz Bookseller on East 64th Street beginning Oct. 21. Berlin - who used to make paintings by smearing canvases with her paint-covered breasts - wants to make a rug out of six Paris Hilton front pages, if she gets a commission, with a border of pink cupcakes and Chihuahuas in the four corners. {via NY Post - Page Six}
